You've probably heard about the Motrin ad backlash by now. If not see Company caves to moms' Motrin ad backlash - Motrin ad pulled after blogging moms sling barbs at firm.
In response, Motherhood Uncensored did this:
You may need a dose of Motrin for those sore ribs you get after laughing too hard. But seriously, the controversy isn’t all that funny.
It was covered by my friend Jim Turner at the Social Mediasphere on BlogTalkRadio last night.
Good discussions and nice to see so many people I knew in the chat room. (I was in and out due to a conference call.)
Put down the snark, lady!
My take on it? Just because some mom bloggers are good at being snarky, doesn’t mean you should do it in an ad aimed at moms. Motrin did, women felt put down and then got very angry about it.
I’ve experimented with being snarky on a few blogs, but decided against it because it’s not my natural voice or personality. Some bloggers do snarky well, because they are funny, intelligent and talented writers. However, many snarky bloggers come off as annoying, which is probably why I don’t read some of the more popular snarky blogs. (It’s more about me than them. Really.)
In the case of mom blogging, I think the snarky voice is becoming a harmful one, too. (See my review of Sleep if for the Weak for my reasons.) Mom bloggers have to stop putting themselves down. We’re better than that. Looking at the reaction to the Motrin ad, I think most women agree, too.
