I'm trying to decide if I should bother seeing "War of the Worlds." First, I can't stand Tom Cruise, especially lately with his nutso behavior. Second, I'm so tired of watching disappointing science fiction movies. (We finally got to see Star Wars III last week. A gorgeous film with a bad plot, terrible dialog, and awful acting. Damn. When's the next Star Trek movie coming out? Even at their worse, Shatner and company were never this bad.)
Third, I'm reading reviews saying that this film isn't as good as "Independence Day." While ID had its flaws, it was entertaining and is one of my favorite sci-fi disaster movies. I think it must be Will Smith, because I also loved "I, Robot" too.
However, it could be fun watching New Jersey get invaded and blown up by space aliens. Boom, there goes the Turnpike! No point in blowing up Asbury Park, however. It's already a disaster. But two hours of Tom Cruise acting like he's a good daddy/normal person? That's even more scary and unbelievable than the aliens.
(Thanks to Film Geek Central for the funny graphic and excellent review.)
